An ice dam forms when heat leaking into your attic melts snow high on the roof, the water runs down to the cold eave, refreezes, and then backs up under the shingles. In central Pennsylvania it is one of the most common causes of winter leaks. Two things prevent it: a waterproof ice barrier membrane along the eaves and valleys, and an attic that is well enough insulated and ventilated to keep the deck cold. We look at both, and we will tell you if the real problem is the attic rather than the roof.

Late spring through early fall is easiest, because asphalt shingles need reasonable temperatures to seal properly. That said, we install year-round and adjust the method for cold weather when a roof cannot wait. If your roof is leaking in January, do not sit on it until May hoping for better weather — a winter of freeze-thaw will make the repair bigger.

We inspect and document the damage thoroughly — photographs, measurements, and a written report you can hand to your insurer. We are roofers, not adjusters, so we do not negotiate your claim for you; we make sure what is actually wrong with your roof is on the record, clearly enough that it does not get missed.

It depends on your municipality. Pennsylvania's Uniform Construction Code leaves the ice-barrier requirement in the code's climate table to the local jurisdiction. We install an ice barrier at the eaves and in the valleys as standard either way, because ice dams are one of the most common causes of winter leaks here.

Usually not, and we don't recommend it. Pennsylvania adopted the 2021 International Residential Code effective January 1, 2026, and it doesn't allow a new layer over two existing layers or over water-soaked or deteriorated shingles. A tear-off to the deck lets us find and fix soft decking before it's covered up.

Not necessarily. Plenty of homes around Carlisle, Harrisburg and the older Mechanicsburg blocks were built with slate. We'll tell you honestly whether yours is worth repairing or has reached the end, and we won't talk you into tearing off a sound slate roof.
